Ob der Aufguss angenehm wird oder unangenehm beißt, entscheidet sich vor allem an einer Stelle – an der Dosierung des Aufgussöls. Zu viel Öl überlagert alles, zu wenig verpufft im Dampf. Dosierung und Anwendung: So gelingt der Aufguss
Die Herstellerangabe ist bei allen sieben Sorten gleich: 5 bis 10 Tropfen auf 5 Liter Wasser, je nach gewünschter Intensität. Umgerechnet sind das ein bis zwei Tropfen pro Liter Aufgusswasser. Mehr braucht es nicht – ätherische Öle sind hoch konzentriert, und in der heißen Kabine entfalten sie sich deutlich stärker als bei Raumtemperatur.
Die richtige Reihenfolge
- Wasser zuerst. Fülle den Aufgusskübel mit Wasser, bevor du das Öl dazugibst. Das Öl gehört immer ins Wasser, nie direkt auf die Steine.
- Tropfen abzählen. Für einen 5-Liter-Kübel beginnst du am besten mit 5 Tropfen. Wenn dir der Duft zu schwach ist, kannst du beim nächsten Mal auf bis zu 10 Tropfen gehen.
- Kurz umrühren. Öl und Wasser mischen sich nicht von selbst. Rühre mit der Kelle um, damit sich die Tropfen im Wasser verteilen und nicht als Film obenauf schwimmen.
- Kellenweise aufgießen. Gib das Aufgusswasser in kleinen Portionen auf die Steine, nicht den ganzen Kübel auf einmal. So bleibt der Dampf gleichmäßig.
- Mit dem Handtuch wedeln. Verteile den Dampf mit kreisenden Bewegungen in der Kabine. So kommt der Duft bei allen an, nicht nur bei den Personen direkt am Ofen.
Niemals pur auf den Ofen
Der wichtigste Punkt vorweg: Aufgussöl darf nie unverdünnt auf die heißen Steine oder den Ofen gelangen. Die Öle sind laut Gefahrenhinweis als Flüssigkeit und Dampf leicht entzündbar. Pur auf einer heißen Oberfläche verdampfen sie schlagartig, der Duft wird stechend und es besteht Brandgefahr. Deshalb gilt auch die Herstellerangabe, die Flasche nur außerhalb der Sauna zu verwenden und zu lagern. Du dosierst also draußen in den Kübel, gehst mit dem fertigen Aufgusswasser hinein und lässt die Flasche draußen.
Auch außerhalb der Sauna einsetzbar
Laut Hersteller lassen sich die Düfte verdünnt auch in der Aromalampe oder als Raumspray einsetzen. Wer den Duft der Edeltanne oder der Latschenkiefer also nicht nur im Saunagang mag, kann ihn so auch ins Wohnzimmer holen.

Welcher Duft zu welcher Gelegenheit
Eine einfache Faustregel für die Auswahl: Nadelholzdüfte wie Edeltanne, Latschenkiefer und Apfel-Fichte wirken erdig und wärmer, sie passen gut in die kalte Jahreszeit und zu ruhigen Abendsaunagängen. Zitrusdüfte wie Zitrone und Mandarine-Orange sowie die Minze sind heller und frischer, sie passen in den Sommer und zu Saunagängen, nach denen der Tag noch weitergeht. Eucalyptus ist der klassische Saunaduft, den viele aus der öffentlichen Sauna kennen, und für viele der Einstieg.

Sicherheitshinweise
Aufgussöle sind konzentrierte ätherische Öle, keine harmlosen Duftwässerchen. Die Gefahren- und Sicherheitshinweise des Herstellers gelten für alle sieben Sorten gleichermaßen:
- Nur verdünnt verwenden. Immer ins Aufgusswasser tropfen, nie unverdünnt auf Steine, Ofen oder heiße Oberflächen. Flüssigkeit und Dampf sind leicht entzündbar.
- Nicht auf die Haut. Das unverdünnte Öl verursacht Hautreizungen und kann allergische Hautreaktionen auslösen. Bei Berührung mit der Haut: mit Wasser und Seife abwaschen oder duschen. Bei Hautreizungen ärztlichen Rat einholen.
- Allergiker aufgepasst. Wer auf ätherische Öle empfindlich reagiert, sollte mit der niedrigsten Dosierung beginnen oder vorab die Inhaltsstoffe auf der Verpackung prüfen.
- Von Hitze fernhalten. Die Flasche von Hitze, Funken, offener Flamme und heißen Oberflächen fernhalten – deshalb nur außerhalb der Sauna verwenden und lagern. Behälter dicht verschlossen halten.
- Kinder. Bewahre die Flasche wie jedes ätherische Öl außerhalb der Reichweite von Kindern auf und lass Kinder nicht selbst dosieren.
- Umwelt. Die Öle sind giftig für Wasserorganismen. Reste nicht in den Abfluss schütten, sondern gemäß den lokalen Vorschriften entsorgen.
Dazu kommt der allgemeine Sauna-Hinweis, der unabhängig vom Aufgussöl gilt: Saunieren belastet den Kreislauf. Wer sich unwohl fühlt, verlässt die Kabine. Wer gesundheitliche Einschränkungen hat oder schwanger ist, klärt vorab mit Arzt oder Ärztin, ob und wie Saunagänge in Frage kommen.
Aufguss zuhause in der Heimsauna
In der Heimsauna gelten dieselben Regeln wie in der öffentlichen Sauna, nur die Kabine ist meist deutlich kleiner. Das ändert die Dosierung.
Weniger ist mehr
Die Herstellerangabe von 5 bis 10 Tropfen bezieht sich auf 5 Liter Wasser. In einer kleinen Kabine mit zwei bis drei Sitzplätzen brauchst du selten den ganzen Kübel. Wenn du nur 2 Liter Wasser ansetzt, bleibst du beim gleichen Verhältnis von ein bis zwei Tropfen pro Liter, also 2 bis 4 Tropfen. Beginne mit der unteren Grenze. Der Duft verteilt sich in einer kleinen Kabine viel schneller und konzentrierter als in einer großen Aufgusssauna, und nachlegen ist einfacher als lüften.
Lüften nicht vergessen
Nach jedem Saunagang solltest du die Kabinentür öffnen und kurz durchlüften, in der Heimsauna zusätzlich den Raum, in dem die Kabine steht. So baut sich der Duft nicht über mehrere Aufgüsse auf, und die Kabine trocknet aus. Wenn du im selben Abend die Sorte wechseln willst, lüfte dazwischen gründlich, sonst mischen sich die Düfte.

- Verwende eine Pipette oder zähle die Tropfen direkt aus der Flasche – so bleibt die Dosierung nachvollziehbar.
- Lagere die Flaschen im Vorraum oder im Bad, nicht in der Kabine, auch nicht auf der Ablage neben dem Ofen.
- Für den Einstieg reicht eine Sorte. Wer erst ausprobieren will, welcher Duft passt, ist mit Eucalyptus oder Edeltanne meist gut beraten und kann später auf Zitrone oder Mandarine-Orange für den Sommer erweitern.

Wie viele Tropfen Aufgussöl kommen in den Aufgusskübel?
Laut Hersteller 5 bis 10 Tropfen auf 5 Liter Wasser, je nach gewünschter Intensität. Bei kleineren Wassermengen rechnest du mit ein bis zwei Tropfen pro Liter.
Kann ich das Aufgussöl direkt auf die Saunasteine geben?

Wie lange hält eine Flasche?
Das hängt von der Tropfenzahl und der Häufigkeit deiner Saunagänge ab. Bei 5 bis 10 Tropfen pro Aufguss reicht eine Flasche für viele Saunagänge. Behälter dicht verschlossen und außerhalb der Sauna lagern, damit das Öl nicht verdunstet.
